"The idea behind human terrain teams, or HTTs, is to put a small army of civilian social scientists (ideally anthropologists) and intel-savvy military officers into the field to give brigade commanders a better understanding of local dynamics. The teams are charged with “mapping” social structures, linkages, and priorities, just as a recon team might map physical terrain. By talking to locals the teams might help identify which village elder the commander should deal with or which tribe might be a waste of time; which valley should get a roads project and whether a new road might create a dispute between villages. It’s all part of General David Petraeus’s doctrine of a smarter, management-style counterinsurgency. There are now six five-to-nine-person human terrain teams in Afghanistan and 21 teams in Iraq. If the concept proves successful, the $120 million–plus program would grow to 700 HTT and support staff in those countries and other hot spots. The man charged with managing the program is retired special operations colonel Steve Fondacaro. He is so passionate about it that when I interviewed him back in the States, he held forth for nine hours straight. Seven hours in, he walked into a door, breaking his jaw, but resumed talking. Fondacaro freely admits that one of the biggest obstacles to injecting social science into the military will be the military itself. “We are like a virus infecting the host,” he told me. “Either the army will be inoculated and be stronger, or they will expel us in a torrent of puke.”" (thanks May)

"Under the heading of "information operations" or "force protection," the military has launched intelligence activities that, were they conducted by the CIA, might require a presidential finding and notification of Congress. And by using contractors who operate "outside the wire" in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the military has gotten information that is sometimes better than what the CIA is offering. A reconstruction of what happened, based on conversations with a half-dozen military and intelligence sources, raises two crucial issues: What new military procedures are needed to bring "information operations" and related activities under better control? And how can the CIA improve its own collection efforts so that private contractors aren't brought in to fill the gaps? The outsourced intelligence operation described by the Times began in 2008 with a push from the Pentagon's Strategic Command, which oversees information operations. A Stratcom civilian named Michael D. Furlong began funding former journalists to provide "ground truth," with a planned budget of $22 million." (thanks Laleh)

"For the first time in the University of California history, the UC Berkeley Student Senate has approved a bill to divest from two US companies in response to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and to Israel’s siege and bombardment of the Gaza Strip. The Senate bill directs both the UC Regents and the Student Government to divest from General Electric and United Technologies. General Electric manufactures Apache helicopter engines; United Technologies manufactures Sikorsky helicopters and F-16 aircraft engines.
A reader who should not be identified sent me this: "This is in regards to the Jerusalem demonstrations and Israeli censorship. I received a frantic call from my sister notifying me that my cousin was captured by the Israelis and severely beaten. There were violent skirmishes between the Israeli Offense Force and Palestinians in East Jerusalem. My cousin, who is from the Mount of Olives neighborhood of East Jerusalem was involved in demonstrations and was apprehended by undercover Israeli agents posing as Palestinian protestors (with keffiyehs concealing their identities) who help instigate violence, and turn around and arrest people. They instigate violence so that the Israeli police/military can have "justification" to use brute and disproportional force. Nonetheless, they beat him in front of press cameras, and detained him. My aunt got word, and went to the Russian compound (detention center) in E. Jerusalem and they did not allow family members to see him. After much discussion, they allowed his brother to walk in to see him, and he swears that he could not recognize his own brother from how badly they had beaten him. Prior to going in, my aunt said she could hear her son getting beaten and tortured in the other room. My cousin Maisa (his sister) said she was able to watch a video of her own brother getting beaten on a website (presumably Palestinian) that was based in Israel (with a ".il"), and there were pictures as well. After getting so many views, the Israelis took down the videos and photos (of course), which is commonplace. Censorship is rampant in Israel, and it's media is far from democratic (contrary to what they want you to believe). I hear from family members constantly that the Israeli authorities target sites that show photos of demonstrations and the repugnant Israeli "response" to save face. Anyway, my cousin is 17, and is currently awaiting trial (while in the hospital). There is talk of a 3rd Intifada. Please post this. I do not want to cheapen the cause by begging for "awareness", but just to inform."
