“Le probable départ de Jacques Chirac de la présidence française peut également ouvrir une brèche dans le front antisyrien mis en place après l’assassinat de l’ancien premier ministre Rafic Hariri.”

Chirac today thought that he decisively settled the matter in Lebanon when he announced that the Sanyurah government is “legitimate.”

“His reluctance to publish can be attributed to a host, or perhaps a combination, of causes, including concern for Emma’s religious sensibility and anxiety over the potential fury he might unleash upon his whole family. What is not at all mysterious is the incident that triggered Darwin’s decision to publish his theory at last—and as [...]

I just spoke to my mother. She is most unhappy about developments in Lebanon. She is most worried too. She keeps asking me about what will happen next, as if I know. She does not support the protests in downtown Beirut. She is most unhappy about the Sanyurah daily carnivals: she believes that while Rafiq [...]

When I was teaching at Georgetown in 1993, I had my office on the same row with her. She would come punctually at the same time around 5:00PM, pass by office, and pear in, and give me dirty looks before walking away. We also noticed that she would use The Arab Mind in her classes [...]

“President Kurmanbek Bakiyev called Thursday for U.S. troops deployed in this former Soviet republic to be stripped of diplomatic immunity after a U.S. service member shot and killed a Kyrgyz civilian. Alexander Ivanov, a 42-year-old fuel truck driver, was shot by a member of the Air Force security detail Wednesday during a security check at [...]

Don’t you get the impression these days that Michael Husayn Young thinks that he actually makes US foreign policy? This is a common illness in Lebanon. Those Lebanese who advocate US foreign policy think that the US will ask them for their opinions as a reward.

This is what you read in the Daily Star: “Report praises Lebanon for economic freedoms.” Economic freedoms? For whom, I wonder.

I just heard Hizbullah MP, `Ali `Ammar, attack Fu’ad Sanyurah on NBN TV and focus on Sanyurah’s war on the poor people of Lebanon over the years, when he served as Rafiq Hariri’s minister of finance. Of course, it is quite true that Sanyruah has been most vicious against the poor people of Lebanon. But [...]

This is a headline from the Washington Post: “U.S.-Led Forces Kill 20 Insurgents in Iraq.” This is in the story: “Two women were among the suspects killed, the military said.”

“A United Nations fact-finding mission to the Gaza Strip that was to be led by Desmond Tutu is in doubt because Israel has yet to give the Nobel laureate permission to enter the territory, officials said Friday.” (But in fairness. UNSC is busy with more important issues, like Hariri family affairs.)

“British military authorities are investigating allegations that Royal Marines shot indiscriminately on Afghan bystanders following a suicide bombing last weekend.”

The man in the balcony (Hariri Mufti, Muhammad Rashid Qabbani) gets ready to jump. People below get ready to catch him.*It turned out that the man in the balcony is Biqa` Mufti, Khalil Al-Mays (who used to recruit volunteers to fight in Iraq–a staunch Hariri supporter). The picture is from An-Nahar which identified the man [...]

You read a lot of brilliant insights during a day. The most brilliant insight I read today was by Hariri mufti, Muhammad Rashid Qabbani. He said that Lebanon is “at a crossroad” (`ala muftaraq turuq). That can only mean one thing: that things in Lebanon can either go this way or…that way. Now you know [...]

I would never mock Fatfatism. Who knows? Fatfatism in the 21st century could be what Marxism was in the 20th century. I would not be surprised. I can even see Fatfatist revolutions around the world. I can even imagine sects, as in Fatfatist-Leninist or Fatfatist-Bushist, etc.

Habib Sadiq is somebody looking for a role, any role. He is willing to switch sides, reverse positions, and flip-flop all to attain a role that has always eluded him. Here, he sounds like that Lebanese TV character, Abu Milhim.
