“The U.S. military in Iraq has imprisoned an Associated Press photographer for five months, accusing him of being a security threat but never filing charges or permitting a public hearing.”

“In the 12th century, Peter the Venerable, Abbot of Cluny, initiated a dialogue with the Islamic world. “I approach you not with arms, but with words,” he wrote to the Muslims whom he imagined reading his book, “not with force, but with reason, not with hatred, but with love.” Yet his treatise was entitled Summary [...]

He can’t help himself: “Having just stirred up a global storm by quoting from a text fiercely critical of Islam, it might have been expected that Pope Benedict would steer well away from anything alluding to another religion that could be open to misinterpretation. Yet only minutes after saying that he was “deeply sorry” about [...]

Hummus in the streets. An American correspondent in Lebanon wrote me this: “i was driving back from…and when we got to naameh just before beirut there was some sort of huge clash on the street, a few hundred young men, some holding rocks or belts, a couple of guys were bloody, i couldnt see where [...]

“Filkins, who will begin a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University this month and start work on a book, said that 98% of Iraq, and even most of Baghdad, has now become “off-limits” for Western journalists. Filkins, one of the longest-lasting and most-honored reporters in Iraq, said that many situations lately have become even too dangerous [...]
