Today, I received my annual shipment of Arabic books from Bisan Bookshop in Beirut. Perhaps due to the news coverage on my TV, I decided to read first Joseph Sa`adah’s account of his killing years in the Phalanges militia during the Lebanese civil war years. This is the book that people should read to know [...]

I heard a Syrian propagandist on Al-Jazeera today. It was quite nauseating. Here is a government that shouts about “liberation” and about “resistance” and has never lifted a finger to support Arabs in distress. How could that government speak of “liberation” when the Ba`thist government accepts the humiliating occupation of the Golan Heights, and the [...]

These Lebanese children was killed by Israel in self-defense, according to the US government.

“In southern Lebanon, often a battleground between Hezbollah and Israeli forces, the soldiers’ capture was praised; residents said they had grown accustomed to the kind of fighting that has followed. “Look, we’re used to it. For 25 years, 26 years, it’s been like this,” said Hassan Qaryani, 21, a butcher from Burj Rahal. He stood [...]

“Among the Lebanese casualties from the Israeli barrages of bombs and artillery shells were at least two large families, television stations reported. News cameras filmed the charred, dismembered remains of one of the youngest victims, identified by a morgue official as a nine-month-old baby from the village of Dweir.”

Bush explains the Middle East situation: “My attitude is this: There are a group of terrorists who want to stop the advance of peace. And those of — who are peace-loving must work together to help the agents of peace — Israel, President Abbas, and others — to achieve their objective. You got to understand [...]

US Department of State explains its position:“QUESTION: How do you see Israel’s move or action of bombing Beirut airport and therefore diverting all flights to Cyprus? How do you view that? Do you see it as Israeli right to defend itself or do you see it as an escalation, or what exactly your position on [...]

Israeli jets “came first to the little village of Dweir near Nabatiya in southern Lebanon where an Israeli plane dropped a bomb on to the home of a Shia Muslim cleric. He was killed. So was his wife. So were eight of his children. One was decapitated. All they could find of a baby was [...]

Even the Independent is also reporting on Lebanon from…Israel: “Sources said 10 members of a single [Lebanese] family were killed in Dweir village and seven from another family were killed in Baflay.”

I am most displeased with the quality not only of the US press–I never have hopes or illusions about the US press–but also of the UK press. Why would the Guardian have their correspondent in Jerusalem, for example, report on Beirut? And why did the reporter so blatantly distorted the words of Hasan Nasrallah from [...]

“[Israeli] Brigadier General Dan Halutz said: “Nowhere is safe [in Lebanon] … as simple as that,” he said. He addressed his warning particularly to civilians in the southern Beirut district of Dahiya”.

“The Lebanese health minister said the Israeli campaign had killed 47 people and wounded 103 since yesterday and later reports suggested the death toll was higher.”

I was most impressed with the new Arabic translation (from German) of Hegel’s Phenomenology. This is the second Arabic translation (from German) of the Phenomenology. But the first one by an Egyptian psychologist is unreadible. This one is quite meticulous and true to the original.

Look at this statement from the Hashemite family: “In Jordan, the second Arab country after Egypt to have a signed peace treaty with Israel, the government issued a statement condemning “Israel’s use of force against unarmed civilians and the outcome in terms of the human loss and destruction of civil institutions.†But it clearly criticized [...]

This just in. The House of Saud issued a statement in which it said that there is a difference between “legitimate resistance” and “uncalculated adventures.” But since when is the House of Saud an authority on resistance? I mean, aside from resisting the pressures to leave the 10th century, what did the House of Saud [...]

I just read the new article on Lebanon by Robert Fisk in the Independent. It only confirms my view about Fisk: he writes like an official propagandist for Hariri Inc. But then again, with his family dinners with Jumblat and Hariri, one understands.
